Laura Dekker 2012 Solo Circumnavigation Success

Laura Dekker, departed Dutch harbor of Den Osse, for St Maarten harbor, in the Caribbean.  From there on  January 20, 2011, she commenced her attempt to solo circumnavigate the globe.

She successfully arrived one year later, age 16, at St Maarten harbor, in the Caribbean.   She sailed on a 11.5m (38ft) Ketch sailboat named Guppy.  Read Article


According to Fox News reporting Jan 21st, 2012, the sailor is estimated to have traveled 27,000 nautical miles with stops to include the Canary Islands, Panama, Galapagos Islands, Tonga, Fiji,  Bora Bora, Australia, South Africa, and finally her last stop, St. Maarten, from which she originally departed from on January 20, 2011.

  1. Who says the youth do not have modern healthy role models! This is real life. I think Rob in Calgary explained it best.

    Rob commented a bit about Laura’s qualities displayed:
    1. Courage, tempered by training and skill.
    2. Confidence in her skills but not brash over-confidence (the sea swallows those who confuse confidence with competence).
    3. Patience and maturity to work day after day towards a distant goal. And how many adults are so comfortable with themselves that they can be alone for a day, never mind a year.
    4. Whatever her birth certificate says, this is a very mature young lady who is a great example.
